Woman claims sexual assault

Ennis police have a sensitive case before them after a local woman claimed she was sexually assaulted at Ennis Inn.
The unidentified woman accused a South African man of drugging her while the pair were having drinks at an Ennis bar on Feb. 21.
Police were dispatched to the motel at 2:01 a.m. regarding the incident, but it wasn’t the alleged victim who phoned police for help.
According to Det. Sgt. Mike Hopson, the suspect called police and told them the woman was crying hysterically and causing a scene in the motel room.
Once police arrived the woman was transported to Presbyterian Hospital of Kaufman for a medical and sexual examination. Testing for a date rape drug has also been performed and Hopson said police are waiting for the results. The suspect was taken into custody for questioning, but no charges have yet been filed. Hopson said the man surrendered his passport to authorities and agreed to take part in a polygraph test scheduled for next week. The suspect resides in Montana and will return for further questioning.
Hopson said the suspect had been drinking throughout the evening but did not seem intoxicated at the time of questioning. However, police reported the female was intoxicated when they arrived at the scene and had a high blood alcohol level.
