Helping Hands update

Curves of Ennis teaming up to aid local food pantry
The race is on for Helping Hands of Ennis.
In an attempt to collect funds and matching food donations for the Allan Shawn Feinstein Grant, the organization has teamed up with Curves fitness center of Ennis to collect food during the grant eligibility period.
The grant, which has been available for the past 11 years, divides $1 million among agencies that provide food to families in need. Helping Hands of Ennis has participated in the program for the past two years and hopes to take advantage of the grant funds again this year.
The eligibility period for the funds and food supply to be matched runs until the end of April, and Jo Wesley, executive director for Helping Hands is hopeful donations will exceed last year’s total.
“The need is greater this year, and I am hoping that the generous folks in the community will help us meet that need,” she said. “With the rising cost of food staples, as well as gasoline and the minimum wage increase only due in July, people are struggling to make it and the chance to have the funds and food matched by the grant is a great opportunity for us,”
The program takes into consideration how many pounds of food is donated to Helpings Hands during March and April and matches it, pound for pound.
In an effort to contribute to the cause, Curves of Ennis has been running a special for the month of March that waives the sign-up fee for new members joining the gym on a 12 month contract, provided they donate a bag of non-perishable food items to the food drive for Helping Hands.
The $149 value offer has been a great motivation to bringing in donations and worked well last year when it started.
“Melinda Whitaker and her customers at Curves brought in a whopping 996 pounds of food last year,” Wesley said.
The availability of the grant matching contributions is a much needed way for the Helping Hands pantry to continue to help those in the community a little longer and is one of the biggest sources of donated items each year.
