EISD needs help as much as anyone

With all of the volunteering our community does for local organizations and associations it would seem every local need should be met, but there’s another group that deserves your attention.
The Ennis Independent School District partners with the city of Ennis and the Ennis Police Department in the area of traffic safety at the beginning of the school day and when school lets out. If there aren’t enough volunteers to be crossing guards for Ennis schools the officers in town are called upon to help.
Although it’s nice to know the school district has a contingency plan when enough citizens aren’t around to help with the traffic safety at each campus it is unsettling to know that officers are being taken off the streets they patrol to hold a stop sign so children can cross the street.
This is a job almost anyone can handle and it should be easy to find a handful of volunteers each day to take care of that responsibility. It’s a good way to give back to the community and provide a valuable service.
Those interested in volunteering for the EISD should talk with the principal of the campus they would like to work with and fill out paperwork for a criminal background check, as required by district policy.
Citizen volunteers are invaluable in filling in some of the gaps at our neighborhood schools – not just in traffic safety, but also in many other roles such as teacher helpers and mentors. We encourage you to take this opportunity to get involved.
