Scam artists working hard to get your money

We received word of a new scam going through Ennis that isn’t through the Internet from a ghost-email from Nigeria, but instead it is done right over the phone.
A woman contacted a reporter of ours this week and explained to him that she received a phone call from a number that showed up on her caller ID as 123-456-7890 wanting to verify her information so she would receive payments from Medicare. The caller on the other end of the line asked the local woman to give her a bank account routing number so the payment could be directly deposited into her account.
A clear indication that this guy wasn’t who he said he was would be that after asking to verify some information he kept asking her to provide certain personal records. Not being born yesterday, as the woman told this would-be con artist, she asked some questions of the caller and figured out this was an obvious scam.
Everyone should beware that there is no such thing as a free lunch and any “gift-giver” offering something over the phone or through the Internet should be doubted because it is most likely a scam in action. Those who are particularly at risk are the elderly as they can be confused by these slick operators with cagey stories about needing to transfer money overseas and asking you to take out a handling charge but send the remainder back to an unknown foreign address.
Should you receive such a solicitation from what you suspect to be a con artist, contact your local police department and give them any information obtained from the imposter. This simple act of warning those around you could prevent millions of people from getting ripped off.
