Alleged drunk driver stopped along I-45

While checking interstate traffic with a radar gun Monday, Officer Jeff Bates stopped what turned out to be a drunk driver.
At 9:55 p.m. Bates was at the 250 mile marker when he detected a speeding SUV traveling northbound at nearly 90 mph. Bates proceeded to stop the vehicle and while doing so observed the driver having difficulty staying in a single lane.
Once Bates had the suspect stopped he reported the man attempting to exit the vehicle several times. Bates kept the man inside the vehicle while speaking with him. Bates reported the suspect smelling of alcohol and slurring his speech while speaking with the officer. A field sobriety test was issued, which the suspect failed. The man was taken into custody and the vehicle was released to a female passenger.
It was discovered the suspect had a previous DWI in Dallas County in 2006.
Balvantkumar Patel, 49, of Grand Prairie was charged with driving while intoxicated. Bond was set for Balvantkumar’s release at $10,000 and he was transferred to the Ellis County Detention Center.
