Volunteers for  Meals on Wheels

Summertime brings need of extra help in delivering meals
The onset of summer heat is a critical factor for Meals-on-Wheels of Johnson and Ellis County, as members routinely check on the homebound, disabled and elderly residents in the community.
With school out and families on vacation, this time of year also brings the need for extra volunteers to help deliver meals.
“With the summer months approaching, it is more important than ever for dedicated volunteers to be available to check on our seniors daily,” said Shanna Dunn, Ellis County volunteer coordinator.
The effects of heat tend to strike hardest among the elderly population. In fact, more than half of the nation’s heat-related deaths occur in persons 65 years and older.
The major cause of these types of deaths is a result of elderly persons living on fixed incomes turning off fans and air conditioners in fear of high utility bills. Meals-on-Wheels also assists by providing fans during the summer months to those who are in need.
“With daily contact from our volunteers, Meals-on-Wheels helps in preventing possible heat-related deaths from occurring,” Dunn said. “In some cases, our volunteer might be the only person that senior may see all day.”
Prepared meals are picked up and served Monday through Friday between 11 a.m. and noon, county wide, with delivery times taking no longer than one hour.
Volunteers are provided with detailed directions and instructions, and most help when they can, whether it is weekly, a couple of times a month, or simply on an as needed basis.
“Not only do the volunteers deliver meals to the homebound, the daily contact they provide might save a life,” Dunn said.
To become a volunteer or to be added to a meal delivery route contact Meals-on-Wheels at 972-351-9943. Meals-on-Wheels is a community-based non-profit organization serving the residents of Ellis County since 2001.
