Miss Katie & her coffee

Old-timers like to tell the story of Katie Daffan and her coffee-drinking routine –– at restaurants the famous literary figure who lived out her last years in Ennis used to order two cups, and empty one into the other until her favorite beverage was sufficiently cooled.
Now, from the scrapbook of Bernadine Jurik, comes this photo catching “Miss Katie” (at left, in feathered hat) in the act of sipping the coffee she loved. The occasion was that of Jurik’s wedding reception, held in the McKinney St. home of her mother, Celesta Bohanon, on March 15, 1951. Only two months later, on May 17, Daffan was struck by a car at the corner of Baylor and Dallas streets, and died of her injuries shortly thereafter at Ennis Municipal Hospital.
