College offering mare/foal workshop

Mare owners seeking information on broodmare management and raising foals will have an opportunity to attend a two-day program focusing on just that at the 11th Annual TAMU Mare/Foal Workshop on Tuesday and Wednesday, February 20-21, 2007 at Texas A&M University.
The workshop will be held at the Louis Pearce Pavilion. This location will allow for a hands-on approach to some of the workshop topics. Mare owners will be able to gain experience using the body condition scoring system with mares on hand for scoring and discussion. Weight estimation and broodmare and foal nutrition will be covered. Forage selection and hap quality will be included.
Basic reproductive function, detection of estrus and signs of foaling will be discussed or demonstrated. Health care and restraint of mares, as well as some foal handling and neonatal care, will be covered.
Resource material related to horse theft awareness and prevention will be presented. A freeze branding and microchipping demonstration is planned to better familiarize owners with ways to permanently identify horses.
This two-day-long workshop is designed for mare owners. It is not intended to be a breeder’s school and will focus much more on mare management than on breeding procedures. The information should be useful for the mare owner, regardless of the number of mares they own or manage.
Instruction will be provided by equine faculty from both the College of Veterinary Medicine and the Equine Science Section of the Animal Science Department.
You must pre-register to attend the workshop. Registration includes printed materials, refreshment breaks and noon meal. For start times and pre-registration information, contact Dr. Martha Vogelsang or Dr. Pete Gibbs at 979-845-1562. m-vogelsang@tamu.edu or
