Dark comedy takes local stage, will run through August
A new production at the Ennis Public Theatre opens Friday, August 1, at 8 p.m. Crimes of the Heart, a melodramatic dark comedy by Beth Henley was written in 1978 and features the Magrath sisters: Meg, Babe and Lenny. The siblings gather at their grandfather’s farm to reunite after the youngest sister, Babe, shoots her abusive husband.
Set in Hazlehurst, Mississippi, the play details the path the three girls have walked in their efforts to survive a dysfunctional family that thrives on ugly predicaments. While coping with the latest family drama the girls must also deal with assorted relatives and come face to face with their past –– their own crimes of the heart.
Producer Bill Rhoten has put together an all-star cast featuring several familiar faces as well as newcomers to the Ennis stage.
Rhoten, who has more than 30 years of training and experience, ranging from acting and directing to producing, has also performed in more than 40 productions in the Dallas area. He founded both the Dallas Theatre on Tour and the Prairie House Dinner Theatre.
He is a recipient of the “Critics Choice” Award from the Dallas Times Herald for his performance in and directing of The Woolgatherer. His writing credits include two screenplays, a TV pilot titled ‘Jesse’s Diary’, a short film available on Amazon.com and a film called New Hope which was selected with 30 other shorts in its category of 1,800 submitted for competition at the Palm Springs International Film Festival.
