VFW donates to Sweetheart Banquet, coming up Feb. 12
Darrell Nelson, pastor of Faith Assembly of God Church for the past four years and president of the Christian Ministers Association, spoke to the Ennis Kiwanis Club Thursday about the “great beauty of Ennis and the many wonderful aspects the city has to offer.”
“(Ennis) is a beautiful town,” Nelson said. “It is good to be living in Ennis.”
Nelson said he was impressed to see how active a role the young people of the city take, pointing out Ennis High School Sophomores Katelyn Dolezalik and Kayce Canody, who were at the Kiwanis meeting representing the Key Club.
“It is neat to see young people getting involved in the community,” Nelson said.
Nelson also spoke about Ennis’ many volunteer opportunities with organizations that provide assistance; he singled out the Ennis Christian Ministers Association.
“The Ministers Association provides basic staples of life,” Nelson said. Activities in which the group is involved include the Community Thanksgiving Service and Voluntary Hospital Chaplaincy Ministry, which Nelson said has been used widely by both doctors and patients.
A forthcoming event to which the Ministers Association lends a hand is the annual Golden Sweetheart Banquet, geared to spouses who have been married 50 or more years.
“It is a great blessing to see those people sharing their stories,” Nelson said.
This year’s event will be held Feb. 12 at 6 p.m. Ennis Care Center is providing the meal at no charge.
The Kiwanis Club and VFW Post 7106 each donated $100 to the Ennis Christian Ministers Association for the banquet.
Nelson was ordained in 1986 with the Assemblies of God and served his first pastoral position at First Assembly of God in Ballinger from 1989 to 2003. He then moved to Ennis where he has served ever since.
Nelson is presently enrolled as a Distant Education Student at Southwestern Assemblies of God University working on completing a Master of Divinity Degree. He is planning to graduate in May 2009.
The Ennis Kiwanis Club meets Thursday at noon at the Odd Fellow & Rebekah Retirement Center.
