Good help is hard to find

I have never been a big supporter of the infamous ‘honey-do’ list. The reason being that when I want something done around the house, unless it involves wielding a chain saw or (heaven help us all), a nail gun, I’ll do it myself.
However, on those rare occasions that I do expect help, my hubby begrudgingly complies although it means wrenching his neck around the corner so he can still see the TV screen – after 10 years of marriage, the man could rival the Ringling Brothers Circus for his feats of contortion.
This past weekend was one of those times I needed his help. We were finally going to tackle the dreaded spare room. That room as long as we have ever had one, has only once had a bed in it and only for a week. What it usually contains are the pieces of furniture that don’t quite fit the living room and all the boxes we have packed and moved from space to space under the guise of actually needing them. So, after getting tired of not being able to open that door without seeing a huge mess, I decided the time was right, I had the weekend off and WE were going to clean that room.
Well, what started out as a combined effort of him picking things up and stacking things, quickly became a game of “do you think we need this?” and “where does this go?” I lost my patience and sent him and the dog to the living room to sort through the boxes out there.
That my friends was my mistake because as I got up from the middle of my pile of throw-away and keep items a few hours later, I found out what the two would be ‘helpers’ had been doing while I was slaving away. Both had decided that after a full 20 minutes of work they apparently needed naps. I found one in his recliner oblivious to my ranting and raving in the room beside him and the other at his feet, equally as oblivious.
I have learned my lesson and have devised a game plan for the next time a ‘spring cleaning’ mood hits me. Make sure the boxes and items I need sorted through are stacked on top of the recliner and couch so at least there is some incentive to cleaning those off before the napping begins – note to self.
