Kiwanis Club reunited with treasure

Piece of club’s history discovered, purchased at Preston Street Garage Sale
Wynell Rose’s expectations probably weren’t too high when she was perusing through the Preston Street Garage Sale in July, but she ended up stumbling onto something very important to herself and fellow members of the Kiwanis Club of Ennis.
Rose found a plaque honoring Dr. A.L. Thomas with a Kiwanian of the Year Award in 1965 from Kiwanis International. Although the piece of club memorabilia cost only $2 for Rose to buy, to the Kiwanis Club it is a priceless possession the group is glad to see among its members again.
“It made me really mad to see the award for sale, because Dr. Thomas was one of the most beloved citizens around,” Rose said. “I heard some people talking at the garage sale and the award’s seller apparently buys a lot of things at estate sales, so he probably got it after Dr. Thomas died.”
During Thursday’s meeting when the recovered plaque was revealed, members reflected on some personal memories of Thomas.
“He was a very, very special citizen,” Rose said. “He was my mother’s doctor. He would make special trips to see his patients out to their home in the county. You just don’t get that any more these days.”
“He was off delivering babies and stuff,” Kiwanian Billy Ables said of Thomas’ sparse attendance at times when they served together with the service club.
The Kiwanis Club said they already have plans with the award as a proper memorial to the man who helped found the club in the late 1940s.
“I bought it because I thought we could do something with it,” Rose said.
Geri Callender, a Kiwanis Club past president and director of the I.O.O.F. where the group meets, said she would display the plaque at the retirement center giving proper tribute to a true hero of Ennis, the Kiwanis Club and mankind in general.
The Ennis Kiwanis Club meets every Thursday at noon at the Odd Fellow and Rebekah Retirement Center.
