Local guitarist releases first album

Ball has been making music since childhood
Local musician Wes Ball has big dreams and a dedication to a hobby he hopes one day to turn into a profession.
Ball, the son of Mike and Sandy Ball of Ennis, has been playing music since he was 8 years old with his first guitar.
“I picked up the guitar when I was 8 and basically just learned to do a few chords and strum the strings a little, but I didn’t get as excited about it until my teens,” Ball said. “When I started writing my own songs I knew I had to learn to do more on the guitar so my career could progress.”
The first song he wrote, “Rodeo Man,” shows up on his new CD and was written when he was just 11. While he has had to make some minor changes on the song, he is excited to include it in his debut album and says his music is a mix of country, blues and classic rock.
“I listen to everything from Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, Stevie Ray Vaughn and the Allman Brothers Band, so my album shows a mix of what I like and what I’m into,” he said. “Music is what I love and I always hope those types of genres are in what I do.”
Having graduated from Ennis High School in 2006, he attends Tarleton State University where he will graduate in 2010 with a degree in Fitness Management and hopes one day to either teach or become a coach. Having a degree really isn’t his back up plan, but he does hope to always have music in his life and hopes to eventually go on tour with his band. Currently the group plays near Stephenville and in Ennis when possible. Ball said he likes performing to the home crowd because it gives him the opportunity to catch up with people he doesn’t get to see often.
“Playing at home is always fun because it’s people I know in a place I know,” he said. “I love performing and it is always nice to be able to do it with friends and family there to support you.”
He credits his family’s support for the reason he is able to do what he loves and for believing in him enough to help him succeed.
“My whole family is really supportive of what I do and they are the reason I was able to do this album so I appreciate what they do for me,” Ball said.
The Wes Ball Band consists of other local performers; Jonathan Stines, Zeke Martinez, Dan Berry and producer Ryan Snipes. The band will be performing at various local venues. For more information visit their Web site www.myspace.com/wesballband.
