City issues public notice

In an effort to maintain the proper working order of the City’s wastewater system, the City of Ennis wants all residents to be aware of the potential damage that can be caused by improperly disposing of liquefied fats, oil or grease (also known as FOG).
FOG can be found in many food ingredients, including meat, cooking oil, shortening, butter, margarine, baked goods, sauces and dairy products.
If improperly disposed, FOG can cling to the insides of pipes in the wastewater system. Wastewater then can’t move freely through the pipes to the wastewater treatment facility and can cause sewer backups. Sewer backups are a major problem. They damage property and affect public health. Also, the damages caused by sewer backups can be extremely costly. Following the guidelines listed below you can help avoid repeated repairs and unnecessary disruptions in service.
Do not dump cooking oils, poultry fat or grease down the drain or into the toilet.
Do not use hot water and soap to wash grease down the drain. Once in the pipes, the soap and grease mixture will cool and harden, clogging the pipes.
Do place cooled cooking oil, poultry fat and meat fat in sealed, non-recyclable containers and discard with your regular garbage.
Do use paper towels to wipe residual grease or oil off of dishes, pots and pans prior to washing them.
Adhering to these simple guidelines can help eliminate sewer backups and other problems in the wastewater system. If you have any questions about what is safe to put down your drain, contact the city of Ennis Utility Department at 972-875-1234.
