Man dead in two-vehicle accident

21-year-old thrown from vehicle after chase with teens
Jose Rivas Jr. was killed in an accident early Sunday morning that left five others uninjured.
At approximately 2:40 a.m., Rivas, 21, of Bardwell was traveling eastbound in the 1300 block of Lake Bardwell Drive when his black GMC truck struck a maroon Ford F150 from behind and lost control. Rivas’ truck crossed the westbound traffic lane, entered the ditch on the north side of the roadway and began to roll, which resulted in Rivas being thrown from the vehicle. The unoccupied truck rolled to a stop west of upside down 214 feet west of Hall Street.
Ennis police reported Rivas was breathing but not responding to officers following the incident. Rivas was flown to Parkland Hospital in Dallas at 3:36 a.m. A Dallas medical examiner reported Rivas died from his injuries at approximately 5 a.m.
The five occupants in the F150 were Javier Valles, 17, Antonio Mata, 17, Jamie Espino, 16, Ruben Espino, 15, and Salvador Espino, 13, all of Ennis.
A witness said both vehicles were traveling at a high rate of speed, but was unable to determine which vehicle caused the accident.
According to the accident report, Valles, the driver of the F150 said Rivas was driving recklessly and chasing the occupants of the F150, causing the accident. Following the accident, Valles reported driving to the residence of the owner of the vehicle he was driving and then going to the police department to report the incident.
Officer Sherman Swafford reported the passengers from Valles’ vehicle confirmed Valles’ story that Rivas attempted to run them off the road and chase them down. Swafford also noted the damage to the F150 was consistent with what Valles told police.
