Officer’s termination status altered

As a result of appealing a decision that saw Ennis Patrol Officer Isidro "Sid" Lopez terminated from the police department, Lopez was granted a 30-day suspension without pay after a nearly four-hour hearing with the Ennis City Commissioners on Nov. 25.
City Manager Steve Howerton said the commission voted unanimously regarding that decision.
"The city commission voted unanimously to modify the appeal decision for Isidro ‘Sid’ Lopez from termination to 30 days suspension without pay," he said.
Despite attaining a position with the police department again following his suspension, Lopez tendered his resignation with the department the very next day.
Lopez served on the Ennis police force several times since 1988 as a police dispatcher and patrol officer. In total, his time as a city of Ennis employee amounted to approximately 14 years. Lopez also served a year with the Ennis Independent School District as Chief of Police from September 1999 to July 2000.
Lopez ran for Ennis City Marshal in 2007, receiving nearly a quarter of the votes, but coming in second in the race to current Chief of Police John Erisman.
Lopez’ termination from the department was announced in September for reasons cited as "insubordination."
According to Erisman, Lopez’s employment status with the city of Ennis was terminated on Sept. 12 following an internal investigation that showed there was a violation of the city’s personnel policy. The specific reason for Lopez’s release was never stated.
Rescinding Lopez’ termination status will allow him to continue to work for another department in the law enforcement field.
