Deceased man identified
The Ellis County Sheriff’s Office has identified the man shot by one of their officers last week. He is Jerry Thomas Hunter, 49, of Oklahoma.
While attempting to serve a felony warrant on Dec. 16, deputies attempted to stop a vehicle on Oak Branch Road at the intersection of Old Maypearl Road, located to the west of Maypearl. The warrant was for one of the occupants of the vehicle for felon in possession of a firearm.
According to reports from the Sheriff’s Office, while attempting to serve the felony warrant, the arresting officer fired his weapon one time in defense, resulting in striking Hunter, who was pronounced dead upon arrival at Baylor Medical Center.
Texas Rangers are investigating the case.
