Firefighters, police going head-to-head

A newly formed fund-raiser will have local police and fire departments firing up the grill in some friendly competition as the first annual “Battle of the Badges” Rib Eye Cook-off is set to take place in March.
Held by the Texas Area Darts Association to coincide with their upcoming Bull Shoot for Charity, the cook off will take place at the American Legion in Ennis with proceeds to benefit Helping Hands of Ennis.
Battle of the Badges is intended to bring together the men and women serving Ellis County within the fire and police departments to show off their grilling skills in a friendly competition where they will vie for the Champion’s Trophy and, of course, bragging rights for the remainder of the year. The trophy will be kept at the winning team’s department until the following year’s event, where a new champion could emerge.
Only 18 teams will be able to compete and teams will cook between 5-10 steaks, with one steak to be presented to the judging panel and the remaining steaks to be sold as dinner plates to the public. All of the proceeds from the plates sold will go toward Helping Hands of Ennis.
The winning department from the 2009 event will have the prerogative of deciding where the proceeds will go during the 2010 event, but only if the champions return the following year. If they do not, the returning team with the next highest point total will decide the charitable organization.
Entry into the event is free. The only thing required of each team is that they be responsible for bringing their own grill, seasonings/marinade, cooking utensils and charcoal/wood. Ellis County fire and police departments are asked to commit early, so that the proper number of steaks are provided and the correct amount of grilling areas are secured.
The cook-off will take place March 7 at the American Legion of Ennis, located at 706 Rumbo Road. The deadline to enter is Jan. 30.
Entry forms and cook-off rules can be obtained by contacting Erik Lusk, Texas Area Darts Association president, at 972-898-0597 or online at www.ellis-sports.central.net.
Helping Hands of Ennis is a nonprofit organization that gives a hand up to families and individuals suffering a time of crisis imposed by an event or situation beyond their control.
