A transformation has taken place

At the risk of having a mutiny on my hands, this will be the last column mentioning my dog for some time to come. I realize not everyone is as into Louie as I am, but the longer I have this dog the more things I learn. This past week has been no different.
I have long since given up on the fact that I’ve turned into the pet owner I used to make fun of. The one that treats their pet like their child and spoils them rotten. I used to laugh at those people and because there was no way I’d ever be like that … or so I thought until Louie came along. I mention this only because we got Louie back from the trainer this weekend and I think that with all the training Louie received, it was probably his owners that needed a little training.
The trainer, who I will now refer to as “DW” (the dog whisperer), has done wonders with my ill-mannered dog! He seems calmer than what he was, he sits when I want him to and he walks with me when we walk instead of him dragging me through the streets. He actually laid down on the couch while I was sitting on it instead of climbing the couch and me like a mountain goat. Color me impressed. I swear, I’m not sure what gift DW has, but it certainly worked on Louie.
However, the last lesson might be the toughest one yet. When we went to pick Louie up this weekend, DW had a training moment with us and taught me the correct way to keep Louie on track with his training. I have to admit, seeing him be so stern with Louie and not letting him off with thinking he could do what he wanted was a little much too take when I’m used to babying him, but I got over it and paid attention to the steps I will need to take to ensure the month long training session isn’t wasted.
I don’t mind telling you I am feeling more than a little pressured right now because if Louie turns back into the hooligan he was before, the blame falls squarely on my shoulders. Which got me thinking, I think that DW is a tricky guy. All this time he’s been telling me Louie needs training but in reality, he’s been teaching me the basics every time we went to see Louie and before we took Louie home, it was us that needed training!
He’s forcing me to be a different kind of pet owner, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it’s just different than how I am used to behaving. So if you come near my back yard these days you will hear the more stern and forceful me in full training mode and hopefully you will see a better behaved Louie.
Apparently pets don’t really get any better until their owners do, who knew? That DW is a smart cookie, lesson learned DW, lesson learned.
