Snoozing man charged with drug possession

Ennis police arrested a man Sunday in possession of pills and marijuana after finding him asleep behind the wheel.
According to Det. Sgt. Mike Hopson, at 8:22 a.m. while patrolling along the Hwy. 287 Bypass Corporal Julia Pillow and Officer Chris Asbill observed a driver asleep at the traffic light of Ensign Road and the bypass. Police made contact with the driver and the officers put the car in park to avoid the car rolling into oncoming traffic. While trying to wake the man, officers reported smelling an odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle and observed scattered marijuana leaves on the man’s shirt.
Once police were able to wake the man, they reported him having slurred speech and being disoriented. Police took the man into custody for public intoxication and implemented a search of his vehicle. Officer Jeffrey Aaron located a clear bag of marijuana in the vehicle’s ashtray along with the drug known as Xanax. A backpack in the trunk of the vehicle contained 11.48 ounces of marijuana.
Alexander Rodriguez, 18, of Willis, Texas, was charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession of marijuana. It was later discovered Rodriguez had outstanding warrants with Irving police.

Family violence arrest made
Reports of a domestic disturbance Thursday in the 1000 block of N. Sherman Street led police to arrest a man for assault.
Det. Sgt. Mike Hopson said at 1:23 a.m. Officer Donald Kemp and Corporal Rodney Rickman were dispatched to 1006 N. Sherman St. to check on the situation. Upon arrival, officers met with a female who claimed the suspect, an unspecified male family member, had held her down in an attempt to choke her.
Hopson said after the initial report, the woman changed her story and told police the suspect had not tried to choke her, however, red marks and scratches on the woman’s neck upheld her initial report.
The suspect was at the residence when police arrived and he was placed under arrest. The man was transported to Ennis police department without further incident.
Tony Roach, 48, of Ennis was charged with assault family violence.
