Sting Leads to one arrest

For students thinking spring break is the perfect opportunity to push limits and do things they don’t normally do, the Ennis Police Department would like them to know they are on the lookout for illegal activity.
A recent sting operation involving 13 businesses that sell alcohol throughout the community resulted in charges against Lahn Thi Ngoc Phan at The Avenue Drive In at 407 W. Ennis Ave. Phan, 41, of Ennis, was charged with a class “A” misdemeanor for selling alcohol to a minor.
Detective Sergeant Mike Hopson said the department steps up patrols when school is not in session to help cut down on juvenile crime. The department also targets stores that sell alcohol or tobacco to make sure they aren’t selling to students who are not of legal age.
As part of the sting operation, a minor under the direction of Ennis officers went into the local stores and attempted to purchase alcoholic beverages. The Avenue Drive In was the only store where the minor was able to purchase beer.
Hopson says the department is pleased with the results because it shows more compliance with liquor laws than the last sting operation did.
