County lifts burn ban

The Ellis County Commissioners’ Court lifted the countywide burn ban Friday morning during a special meeting.
“The KBDI was 248 this morning – well below 500,” said Fire Marshal Investigator Jim Pharr, referring to the Keetch-Byram Drought Index used to gauge the likelihood of wildfires. “The National Forest Service says it will be a dry spring and summer, but lifting the ban at least for a short period of time will allow people to burn their trash.”
Also during the meeting, Commissioners discussed applying for Recovery Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) funding of $76,950, to be used for Ellis County law enforcement.
The funds can be used for local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, information systems for criminal justice, and criminal justice-related research and evaluation activities.
“In order to get the money, you need to tell them where it will be spent,” said Mike Navarro, Ellis County Auditor. “The mission of this is to preserve and protect jobs.”
Sheriff Johnny Brown said the money could be used to give each county law enforcement officer access to the Texas Crime Information Center from their squad cars. This way, dispatch would not have to be called to access information.
The Commissioners voted to approve the grant application, and Chief Deputy Dennis Brearley will be in charge of writing the grant.
The Commissioners recessed from their regular session to convene into an executive session to discuss the appointment of a new county judge to fill the unexpired term of County Judge Chad Adams.
