It’s time to plant a garden

When it comes to providing for our neighbors in need, feeding the hungry is as basic and important as it gets. Most of the time, it’s hard for needy families to get fresh fruits and vegetables from food pantries. Usually, only non-perishable food items are available by donation.
But beginning in June, clients of Helping Hands in Ennis will be able to have fresh fruits and vegetables almost all year long. Planting of a community garden will begin March 28 and volunteers are needed to make this happen. If you have a green thumb – or just a willingness to get some dirt under your fingernails – come out to the garden, located behind the Helping Hands building on NE Main Street to help out.
This project involves everyone in the community and provides a hands-on way to help others, even if you can’t afford to donate money to a local charity. For those who want to give back, we encourage you to help at the garden.
For those who don’t usually get the opportunity to eat these vitamin-rich foods, the garden will be a valuable resource. Not only will Helping Hands clients be able to feed their families, but they’ll be able to feed them a nourishing and well-balanced diet that meets their nutrition needs.
The garden will have a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables throughout the year, and there will always be something new growing. That means volunteers will be needed throughout the year to help out.
This is such a great project, because it has the potential to affect every person in the community. We want to commend Helping Hands for taking this step in providing a valuable supply of nutritious food to the community.
