Support the cause and ‘Relay Up!’

On Friday night, the culmination of many months of hard work and dedication will be evident to anyone that plans to attend the Ennis Relay for Life ceremony, to be held at the Texas Motorplex on Hwy. 287 beginning at 6 p.m.
Like any event, this is something that takes a host of people to organize with hundreds of details to iron out that promises to leave those there as spectators in awe of how seamless the event looks.
For most people involved in the organization of the event, they know why they are there. It might be for a family member, a friend or even themselves, but they participate and work diligently because cancer has somehow touched their lives and they want to do what they can to give back and fight against something that continues to run rampant despite advances in technology and the hard work of millions of people to fight it.
It is not because of wishing it weren’t so because anyone that has stood by someone dealing with the disease would trade most anything they had for a clean bill of health.
However, until the day comes (and with the experience most committee members have had while helping to organize the event, it seems it will be soon) when the word cancer isn’t the ominous sounding term that it is now, there will be people just like those who will gather on Friday night, who will continue to do everything in their power to make sure that a cure is found.
Until then, why not come out and enjoy some of the many activities teams have planned to help raise money for the cause and put a smile on everyone’s face? With the various activities that include live music, a cross dressing beauty pageant, a donut eating contest and a host of games, there is no limit to the fun that can be had.
The best part is that all of the proceeds from the event are to help fund research so that events like this are not a necessity.
Wouldn’t it be a blessing if instead of an event that helps fund research to find a cure, it could be an event that exists with the single purpose of celebrating the lives that have been saved because a cure was found? Imagine the joy of knowing no one else has to suffer from this disease or knowing that families will no longer have to endure the grief of losing a loved one because of cancer. If you can see that moment, if you can imagine a world where cancer is not something to be feared, then by all means come out and support the Ennis Relay for Life.
There are moments during the ceremony that will undoubtedly break your heart but leave you with a better understanding of just how important it is to keep working toward a cure.
The unofficial slogan of the relay this year comes from Weldon Caldwell, the co-chair of the committee who is fond of saying “Relay Up!” and with any luck the community will show up and make that statement a reality. Plan to show your support, plan to enjoy yourself, but most of all, plan to leave with a strong sense of promise that cancer can be beaten.
