Ennis Express becomes runaway train
Local squad takes top spot in 13U-AA select baseball
Ennis is officially a fixture on the select baseball map.
On Sunday, the Ennis Express 13U-AA select baseball team pulled out all the stops to win the Legends Classic Tournament, which was a 14-team affair in Fort Worth.
Out of 107 AA teams in the area, Ennis (23-6) was ranked third entering the weekend.
“Now I believe we will be ranked No. 1 with the USSSA points we earned from this victory,” said coach Danny Navarro after his team had also won the Mansfield NIT Tournament three weeks ago.
The Express opened Saturday’s pool play against the Weatherford Thunder, which is also one of the area’s elite squads. After falling behind 3-0 in the first inning, Ennis got on a huge roll to win 11-3. Zach Matous pitched a complete game during the four inning run rule.
Cody Navarro keyed the comeback as his first inning triple got Ennis on the board and then a second inning hit for Cody led to another run as he stole a couple of bases. In the third, Ennis broke loose for seven runs and a 9-3 advantage as Brandon Adams and Ian Graham also had a pair of hits along the way.
