Local soldier gets ‘wake up call’ to enlist

Selfless dedication to one’s country and fellow soldiers is something that Ennis native Bo Hackney (Kenneth Wayne Hackney III) takes very seriously.
His dedication to both is something he speaks of with pride, as he should. It takes a special kind of person to do what he does, although to hear him speak of his duties, he would say he is just following orders. His drive to better himself is second only to his drive to protect what we all hold dear and for him, there is no greater quest.
Hackney said his decision to join the Air Force was based on many decisions, the most important one being the loss of his good friend, Dominic Brown of Austin, who was killed in Iraq only five days into his mission.
"When my friend was killed it was sort of a wake up call," he said. "It was as though I knew what I wanted to do because of the sacrifices he had made for us all. I was in college living a normal student’s life and I felt like I owed it to him for what he did to do what I could. The mission was important to him and it became important to me."
Leaving behind three years of college, a family that loved him and all of the things he was used to, he joined the Air Force in 2006 and things have been an adventure ever since.
