Newly dating couple wins Polka crowns

43rd Annual National Polka Festival brings thousands to Ennis for dancing, food, fun
Ashley Sulak and Mark Hermes saw each other for the first time at the Knights of Columbus Hall during the 2008 National Polka Festival. This year, they returned to KC Hall as a couple to enter the Polka King and Queen Competition Friday night, and left with the title.
“It’s a great honor to be associated with the National Polka Festival,” Sulak said. “It’s exciting. This is one of the best polka festivals around, and it attracts people from all over the country.”
Sulak and Hermes have been dating for almost a year and both are active in the Czech community. Sulak, 24, is a member of the McLennan-Hill County Czech Heritage Society, and Hermes, 30, is a member of the Lavaca County Czech Heritage Society. Hermes has been polka dancing since he was very young, when his friends and family encouraged him to enter polka dancing contests, but until now, he never did.
“I didn’t want to win with just anybody,” he said. “I knew it would mean so much more to win with someone I would possibly be with for the rest of my life.”
