Leadership Ennis gives out first scholarship

For their class project, the 2009 Leadership Ennis class went into the community to raise money in order to offer a scholarship to a graduating Ennis High School senior.
This year, the scholarship is worth $1,000, and was awarded to Claire Alston, who has chosen to attend the University of Texas at Dallas. Alston said she was extremely happy she was chosen as the scholarship’s recipient.
Leadership Ennis, which is run by the Ennis Chamber of Commerce, gave scholarship applications to EHS, and the group received 12 applications. Members of the 2009 class of Leadership Ennis, along with alumni of the program, served as scholarship committee members. The committee was in charge of choosing the recipient. Each applicant had to write an essay about leadership.
“Truthfully, we though we did really good by getting 12 applications this first time around,” said Jeannette Patak, president and CEO of the Ennis Chamber of Commerce. “All the applicants really had some excellent essays. The group had an interesting time trying to make the selection.”
The committee narrowed the 12 down to four, and then conducted personal interviews. After the interviews were complete, the committee selected Alston as the winner. She was chosen because she has a lot of leadership experience both in school and at her church.
“Her leadership ability was quite obvious in the way she handled herself and the way she answered the questions,” Patak said.
