Treats for Troops sets pick-up meal, looks for more aid

Treats for Troops is putting together a drive-through pick-up meal at First Christian Church from 11:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Saturday.
Thanks to donations for the meal itself, Treats for Troops is able to charge $3, despite the lunch being valued in excess of $10, said Harriet Adams, the group’s project founder and coordinator.
“How about a juicy hot dog on a warm bun with chili, shredded cheddar cheese, mustard, ketchup and pickle relish all on the side, a bag of chips, a big delicious apple, an evil brownie, a bottle of water and a soft drink … plus a patriotic surprise all for only three bucks?” Adams said.
“It gives families and kids a chance to plan a party, a picnic or just a fun get together where everyone can eat for $3 each. It is our Treats for Troops Stimulus Package. We are calling it Treats for Troops ‘Super Trooper Bargain Meal!’ ”
Tickets for the meal can still be purchased at Prosperity Bank, Ennis State Bank and at First Christian Church.
More donations will be important to keep the organization’s efforts going. Because school is out and families scatter for vacations, the July 4 Treats for Troops donations have been the most difficult in the past, Adams said.
“Since school is out later this year, we want to take advantage of the extra week at the end of May,” Adams said.
