Zoning change to go before commission

Ennis’ Planning and Zoning Commission has given Adan Castillo their blessing to change his business to a private club.
The commission voted 5-1 on Tuesday to approve a special use permit for the zoning change. Next, the issue heads to the city commission for its consideration Monday.
If approved, the zoning change will allow The Main Attraction, a club located at 807 Lake Bardwell Drive, to pursue a state liquor license to eventually serve alcohol on-site.
Previously, The Main Attraction has been a dance and social club with a “bring your own beer” policy, meaning alcohol is consumed at the establishment but not sold there.
Castillo said the move would help develop the business.
“We’ve been there for a little over a year now, and we have been open only on Saturdays,” he said to commissioners. “We just started Friday. For the business to pick up to the next level, we need to go after a liquor license.”
Local property owner George French spoke against the move at the meeting.
Of 30 notifications sent to residents in the area surrounding the bar, 19 came back in protest, largely filed on behalf of residents in French’s properties.
“Our thoughts are that residential property that we own that adjoins that property on the south side doesn’t need the noise factor, which was a tremendous problem some years ago when they had a club there before,” French said.
