Time to think about change

Residents of Texas have made it clear that the economy is the most important item on the agenda these days.
The reasons why are apparent — everywhere we turn, news reports tell us of the difficulties that the nation is facing in the economic crisis that has gripped the United States.
The Associated Press reports that the Texas Workforce Commission is hiring and training additional workers and adding phone lines in an attempt to deal with the increases in unemployment claims statewide. The situation is to the point that the state has urged claimants to file online at the commission’s Web site — www.twc.state.tx.us.
May saw the jobless rate for our state climb to 7.1 percent, up from 6.6 percent in April but still far below the national rate of 9.4 percent.
Locally, the Ellis County unemployment rate has crept up to 7.3 percent.
The numbers are just that, however. What it means for those in the community that struggle to find employment is more important. Competition is heating up faster than the mercury is rising this summer. State support will only last so long, as well.
Those who have struggled without a job for very long understand one truth that cannot be ignored in a period like this — the same old tricks will not make you stand apart on your job hunt.
Maybe it’s time to take a chance on starting your own business. The state’s small business development resources can put entrepreneurs on the path toward establishing their financial independence.
Maybe it’s time to hit the books. Community colleges in the state can help retrain workers whose skills may have become outdated or who lost their jobs in the downsizing wave that has inundated businesses of all kinds.
Ennis’ strong industrial base has proven to be a strong foundation for the city’s future — the Ennis economy is somewhat insulated from some of the fallout in the national downturn because of the needs of those industries. Maybe it’s time to gain the certifications and experience necessary to work in industry.
The depth of the economic distress facing Texas and the nation cannot be ignored, but it can be faced with determined efforts to stay afloat.
