Giving blood is a vital service

We have the chance to save a life every day. Often, though, we find a reason not to.
Giving blood is not a pleasant proposition for some, but medical professionals will tell you that it is absolutely vital for the future of patients of all shapes and sizes that a healthy blood supply is readily available.
The numbers are convincing. The American Red Cross reports that every two seconds, someone in the United States needs blood, but only 5 percent of the population of this great nation donates blood each year.
While medical science may be breaking barriers in fighting illness and disease, the hardest working medical professionals have yet to discover a substitute for human blood.
Blood is precious. It is a resource we cannot live without and one we should realize has to be shared when it is available. If you are healthy, of age and able, giving blood should be a part of your regular routine.
Imagine if we all did. If it was as routine for us all as say, driving to the grocery store to pick up a few essentials, there would be a lot more blood to go around in our supply.
Millions need blood every year, and in order to ensure there is enough to meet those needs, we have to get over our fear of needles, infection, contamination and our territoriality over our blood.
Besides, you get free juice and cookies. You also weigh less when you’re done, it takes less than an hour in most cases, you can’t be asked to do heavy lifting while you’re wearing the bandage and you’ll feel good about yourself.
You just saved a life.
Take the opportunity open today to visit the Ennis Knights of Columbus Hall to give blood between 4-8 p.m., or one of the two blood drives scheduled Aug. 7 and Aug. 11 in town. You’ll be doing something priceless.
