Drug discovery lends credibility to air patrol

The Ellis County Sheriff’s Office made a surprising discovery this week when the weeks-old air patrol spotted marijuana plants being cultivated in a large wooded area on this side of the county.
There is always the tendency to have an “out of sight, out of mind” approach to issues like drugs when the news we hear is limited to busts for drug possession and small, street-level dealers. When deputies zero in on millions of dollars worth of illegal drugs in our own back yard, so to speak, it puts a whole new light on drug enforcement activities in the county.
This was not a luck thing. The air patrol, a grant-funded operation put into place just for this kind of desired result, was a concerted effort on the part of the sheriff. In the effort to keep drugs off the streets, it takes out-of-the-box thinking to make real impacts, and you can bet that the group cultivating the dope in Ellis County is having second thoughts about trying that again. You can bet others who heard or knew of that activity are also reconsidering taking part or starting up similar operations out of our county.
As important as the efforts are of organizations like IMPACT Ennis, which aims to fight drug use among teens in our community, we cannot lose focus on the needs of law enforcement in the never-ending battle to fight against illegal drug use, sale and cultivation. This kind of find proves that the air patrol can be a valuable tool in the sheriff’s efforts in drug enforcement, and it lends credence to the idea of pursuing more grants with which to implement different methods of attacking the drug problem in our county.
The more we put pressure on the people who are a part of the drug culture, the harder it is for drugs to overwhelm communities.
