Precinct 2 gets lowest funds per mile

Ellis County’s proposed budget for the 2009-10 fiscal year includes nearly $2 million for the improvement of roads in Road and Bridge Precinct 2.
Precinct 2 receives more funds than any of the other three precincts, because it has the largest population. Precinct 2 also has the most road mileage, with 344 miles of roads (35 percent of the total road mileage in the county).

However, because the budget is based on population and not road mileage, Precinct 2 — where Ennis is located — actually receives less funding per mile than the other precincts.

In 2001, Ellis County voters rejected a tax increase, and the tax was rolled back to the previous year’s amount, said Precinct 2 Commissioner Bill Dodson. This, combined with an inflation of about 173 percent in material costs over the past six years, has taken a toll on how the county maintains roads, he said. An increase in trucks with heavy loads and an increase in traffic has also impacted the roads.
