Board OKs tax increase
After listening to public opinion in a public hearing Tuesday evening, the Ennis ISD Board of Trustees voted to adopt the district’s 2009-10 proposed budget and tax rate.
The budget comes in at about $53 million, and includes the district’s general fund, food service, childcare, debt service and capital projects. About $26 million of the budget will be derived from local property taxes, with the rest coming from state or other sources.
“It takes a lot of money to operate a school district every year,” said Board President Mack Boyd.
The tax rate of $1.51 per $100 of property includes a 3-cent increase from the 2008-09 level. This increase is part of the debt service tax, which is 47 cents, and will go toward paying the debt incurred from construction associated with the 2008 bond. The remaining $1.04 of the total tax rate is for maintenance and operations, and did not increase.
