Former employee pleads guilty

Former Ennis Daily News office manager Peggy Motley will have to make restitution after entering a guilty plea Tuesday on charges she embezzled more than $120,000 from the newspaper.
Motley, 63, was indicted by an Ellis County grand jury Feb. 18 on a charge of theft over $100,000 and under $200,000. The second-degree felony charge carried a possible sentence of between 2-20 years in jail and a $10,000 fine.

Motley was given a 10-year suspended sentence and ordered to pay $121,319 in restitution as a condition of the suspension, as well as placed on 10 years of probation. Failure to make restitution could result in jail time.

She worked for the Ennis Daily News for more than 20 years. After being notified that a warrant had been issued for her arrest, she turned herself into Ennis police on Dec. 2 last year. She was transported to Wayne McCollum Detention Center, booked and released on a $10,000 bond.

“We’re certainly pleased with the court’s decision,” said Assistant District Attorney Patrick Wilson. “We want to see victims get all the restitution they deserve under the law, and we believe Ennis Daily News is entitled to the full amount they claimed.”

The charges stem from shortages discovered in the company’s financial records during a routine audit. The company looked at financial records going back several years and uncovered evidence of theft throughout that time.

An Ennis Daily News employee first contacted police on Nov. 26, 2008.
