Spotlight on … Austin Elementary’s Jan White

When you first meet her, it is hard to believe that Jan White has cancer.
Her smiling face, strong handshake and piercing eyes all give the impression that she is a strong woman, and she undeniably is. Her hair — still growing back from chemotherapy — is an inch long at most. It flatters her face, possibly leading some to believe she cut it that way on purpose.

As principal of Austin Elementary, Jan didn’t want to let breast cancer take her away from the students and staff at the school. Ever since her diagnosis a year ago, she made it a point to attend work, even if she felt a little under the weather. The only time Jan missed was if she had a doctor’s appointment, she said.

With teachers and other staff stepping in to relieve Jan’s workload, she said she was able to take care of herself and do what she needed to do.

“The teachers took over and helped as much as they could,” she said.

“I couldn’t have done it without the their support — and that of all of EISD, from the superintendent on down.”
