VFW names winners in essay contests

The Jack Lummus Memorial VFW Post’s recently announced the winners of its Patriot Pen and Voice of Democracy essay contests.
Conducted nationwide, the VFW-sponsored Patriot Pen youth essay competition gives students an opportunity to write essays expressing their views on democracy with the prospect of winning U.S. savings bonds. Nationally, first place winners get a $10,000 bond.

First place winner Matty Hutyra’s mother Amy Hutyra said she comes from a military family — her grandfathers served in WWII and the Merchant Marines. Her father Matt Hutyra was in the Navy and her uncles were in the Air Force and Marines. She also has several nephews serving in Germany.
