Ennis has special chance

If organizers’ objectives go as planned, this year’s Relay for Life of Ennis will also serve as a testing ground for a prestigious cancer-prevention effort led by the American Cancer Society.
This year, plans are in the works for Ennis to be one of a handful of communities in the state to take part in the Cancer Prevention Study-3 initiative by ACS, which is an extended-life survey that tracks participants for years to help in the fight against cancer. The purpose of CPS-3 is to better understand the lifestyle, behavioral, environmental and genetic factors that cause or prevent cancer and to ultimately eliminate cancer as a major health problem.

Organizers in Ennis are thrilled — former Relay chair Amy Martinez is leading the way as a steward for the company that will administer the surveys at Relay.

“It’s a huge deal that it could be in Ennis,” Martinez said. “We consider it a great honor — there are only six communities in Texas that have been chosen for this.”

To better understand ways to prevent cancer, the CPS-3 effort will recruit 500,000 adults across the U.S. and Puerto Rico for the new research study. Enrollment takes place at Relay events, and individuals who chose to participate are asked to make a long-term commitment to the study, which involves completing follow-up surveys periodically over the next 20-30 years. Survey participants must be between 30-65 years old and have never had cancer.
