Panthers strong down stretch to squeak by Ennis

If Tuesday night’s ballgame was any indication, 16-4A play is going to keep local hoops fans in suspense throughout.
The Lady Lions (11-5, 0-1) overcame a sluggish start with a sensational third quarter to seize control in Midlothian, but the Panthers owned the fourth quarter to steal the victory back from Ennis 54-52. The final seconds weren’t without controversy, but coach David Kilpatrick said his Lady Lions had their opportunity to slam the door.

“If we could’ve hit our free throws in the fourth, we could’ve put them away,” Kilpatrick said after Ennis took a 10-point lead into the final quarter.

“We missed (11) free throws, which is unusual because we’d been pretty steady from the line recently. Midlothian played well (Tuesday). Their supporting players stepped up and hit open shots, and you have to give them credit.”

While Ennis might’ve delivered its best quarter of the season with 26 points in the third, it scored just 26 the rest of the game — including 13 total points in the first and fourth quarters. Meanwhile the Panthers scored 12,12, 11 and then stepped up with 19 points in the final frame.
