We’ve got some chances left to give

One of the priceless joys of parenthood is the feeling of a shared Christmas.
There’s just something about the innocence of the moment. The feeling of satisfaction for parents able to give the children a beautiful Christmas is nigh indescribable. As our children age, that pureness slowly fades from year to year, becoming a shared understanding of just how wonderful our culture is that a day like Christmas can be so different from its 364 brothers on the calendar.

These days, the numbers speak for themselves, though. We expect that the 10-plus percent unemployment rate, the growing levels of poverty in our community and others and the mounting loss of homes and businesses is a strong indicator that this holiday, much like last, will be far from the most memorable on record for many families.

There are no shortage of ways those among us with means can help, though. Just ask around — toy drives, benefits, fundraising campaigns and other efforts are all helping people during our nation’s economic aches and pains.

To be sure, parents and others gifted in the art of giving understand the wonderful feeling of giving something that is truly appreciated.

Whether we are ever told that our effort is noticed or that we are loved for our work is less important than knowing we’ve done something pure and good.

Turn to the churches and nonprofits in our community in these last days before the coming Christmas holiday to find ways to help out in small measures or large ones. There are people in Ennis scraping by in the most poor of conditions, and those of us with the luxuries of hearth and home are likely unaware that kind of hardship even exists.

Look at what you have and give a little bit up for others this year if you haven’t already. If you have, give a little more. What you’ll get back is worth the effort.
