New test means change

Last week, representatives from Ennis ISD attended a conference where they learned about STAAR — the student testing system that will replace TAKS beginning in the 2011-12 school year.
Although administrators aren’t sure what the test will look like, they do know it will include end-of-course exams in each of the core subjects for high school students, and tests for students in third through eighth grades, said Diana Freeman, program development director for Ennis ISD. Students in seventh grade this year will be the first class required to take the end-of-course tests to graduate.

“Like most things in education with the state, (the testing system) will be phased in,” Freeman said.
