Ennis plans for fine hike

Wastewater violations could be much more pricey for program participants in Ennis if the city passes an ordinance up for consideration next month.
The city is working on updating its ordinance regulating wastewater as it applies for a renewal of its wastewater treatment permit, changing the measure to be more consistent with the standards set by the Environmental Protection Agency and Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.

The city’s last ordinance, adopted in 1992, set fees for participation in the program and potential fines for violations were set at a maximum of $2,500 per violation, said City Manager Steve Howerton. The new measure would boost that to $27,500 per violation. Both figures represent potential daily charges.
