EISD nominee shines light on district success

A man who began his career tinkering with the inner workings of impersonal computer systems, sixth grade math teacher Brent Vrla has truly changed his vocation.
Vrla has gone far enough in his development as a teacher to be selected as a finalist for the Association of Texas Professional Educators’ Educator of the Year Award.

We’re enthusiastic about his chances to earn this prestigious award. He is a qualified and professional educator, using his training in education received from Texas A&M to implement education plans that include his extensive technological expertise in his day-to-day lessons.

Being a techie means being indispensable to his coworkers, as well, who lean on him for that expertise. As Superintendent Barbara Qualls has said, the district is in a great position in its technology resources —learning to use them to their best effect is going to be key for bettering the classroom experience for students. Vrla seems like the kind of teacher poised to do just that.

He’s also teaching an incredibly difficult age in the sixth grade niche. Almost as important as building the foundational skills required for success in later grades and later in life is the task of helping mold young children as they progress into their teenage years. The challenge is considerable.

He is a team leader and head of the math department, but recognizes the strengths of his fellow teachers and relies on them for support and aid. Even being considered through a nomination is an extreme honor for Vrla, but just as much of an honor for the EISD.

It puts another feather in the district’s cap to have teachers recognized on regional and statewide levels, and Vrla’s educational enthusiasm will undoubtedly make an impact on other teachers at the local district level.

We think the EISD has great taste in teachers and hang our hat on the stellar reputation for instruction and care with which the district approaches the learning process. Having individual teachers recognized like this is just confirmation of our strongly held belief that Ennis has some of the best teachers around.
