Cancer study gives Ennis rare chance

A day that has been in planning for months is just around the corner.
We are swiftly approaching this year’s Relay For Life. This weekend, waves of Ennis residents and residents from surrounding communities will walk the grounds of the Texas Motorplex in celebration of the efforts undertaken by cancer fighting organizations across the state, nation and greater global community to stop one of man’s most confounding illnesses.

It’s the kind of effort that cannot be overstated. We would caution you to never restrain the hope that a cure for cancer will be discovered. On any given day, the researchers dedicated to seeing the disease’s eradication are pressing forward in their pursuit of the cure.

Perhaps the biggest way you can curb your disbelief that cancer’s cure will come in your lifetime is to become a part of the research.

We don’t mean donning a lab coat and spending your days and nights toiling in a medical research lab, either. By becoming a part of the efforts to gather environmental data for study toward the causes and mitigating factors in the development of cancer, you as a lay citizen do your best work in helping research professionals around the country to fight cancer.

The Cancer Prevention Study-3, a massive, 20-year survey opportunity meted out by the American Cancer Society, will make its way to Ennis this weekend, providing us a chance to get involved beyond the laps we walk at the Relay and the tears we shed as survivors and their families hit the track. CPS-3 will give dedicated adults with the desire to affect change an opportunity to do that — a high-commitment cost survey system that tracks our lives provides researchers with the kind of data that can help them toward conclusions that change all of our outlooks.

The link to smoking and cancer and the link to the cancer-inhibiting characteristics of a daily dose of aspirin are just two of the concepts gleaned from former CPS studies.

Motivation shouldn’t be lacking for this. It’s probably our best chance to fight against the killer that has touched or will touch almost every person’s life in one way or another.
