Smoking ban a step in the right direction

With months of work and consideration under their belts, Ennis’ city commissioners made a step toward protecting the residents of the city’s health, and that is a decision that was not made lightly in the least.
This week’s passage of the public smoking ban, one discussed at length and from varied perspectives, is a step toward progress.

Make absolutely no mistake, the Ennis Daily News has a deep respect both for commissioners’ dedication to the welfare of the people who call Ennis home and for the process commissioners undertake in an issue like this, which touches people so personally.

Each man and woman charged with making this decision voted with their hearts. They voted after thought and in many cases prayer, and they did so with an understanding that not all share their individual view. In fact, some voted against their better judgment because they saw past their own perspective into the desires of their constituents.

Regardless of the individual perspective on the new law, we feel that with less exposure to the second-hand smoke that prompted this process, people will be breathing just a hair easier in those places where public smoking used to be an allowable pursuit. With fewer places you can be exposed to passive smoke comes a sense that Ennis will be a healthier place.

Our readers can continue to expect an approach that aims to air all angles in a debate like this. Without conflict, there is no progress. This is clear.

In this case, either way, people’s rights are in question — you’re either stopping someone from smoking or stopping someone from breathing smokeless air. That adds a level of complexity to the responsibility of making the final decision that no one but the seven commissioners on Ennis’ governing board can truly understand. There is no right answer in that sense.

But there is an answer that considers people’s welfare, and that is the angle that has been taken.

The work they’ve done to wrap their heads around all of this is extremely important. It’s what we elect them for, certainly, but it is never guaranteed — standing up and being counted because you feel it’s vital to the city’s future health is a hard thing to do.
It’s never been about control, It’s about protecting our lives and those of our children.

With that respect, we go forward with appreciation for the work that has been done, and we think with a little adjustment, Ennis will be better for it.
