Once a camper, now a counselor

When Rachel Bush applied to attend Camp RYLA, she had no idea she would enjoy it so much or that she would return this year.
Bush attended the Rotary Club-sponsored event, held at Camp Hoblitzelle in Midlothian for this district, the summer after her junior year of high school and it made such an impression that she applied for selection as an assistant counselor for this year’s round.

The Rotary Club of Ennis, as well as other Rotary chapters around Texas, selects a boy and girl from each high school in their region to send to Rotary Youth Leadership Award Camp. Students apply and are interviewed by a Rotary panel before selection, and selected students receive a $580 scholarship to attend Camp RYLA. Bush attended as a camper during summer 2009 and said at first she was a little hesitant and didn’t know what to expect.

“I didn’t know anyone who had ever gone,” Bush said. “I was concerned to live with other campers but we found ways to click immediately.”
