Land deal heralds big news ahead

The city has possibly the biggest news of the last 10 years up its sleeves right now, but we’ll all have to wait to find out more about what’s happening.
All we know is what we’ve reported, but rest assured we are eager to find out more hard information about what’s going on in the city’s industrial park. What we know now is the city is in the midst of the biggest industrial land development deal in its history — nearly a half a square mile of Ennis is being sold to “someone” for “some amount of money.”

Those kinds of nebulous answers to important details about this project are hard to ably swallow with comfort, but we’ve been assured the city is only withholding the information for the eventual and ultimate good of the deal itself.

A number of factors come into play in the industrial development game. City officials have warned us of neighboring communities’ follies in this arena, some of whom have shot themselves in the foot by spilling the beans on an industrial land deal or relocation project too soon for a company’s liking. Those kinds of missteps can cost a community hundreds if not a thousand or more jobs, and that’s the kind of thing we understand the need to be cautious about.

In the state of our soft economy, with jobs so scarce and precious, we’re willing to suspend a little disbelief to let the city work this deal out.

For now, we’re sent forward with anticipation about the biggest land deal the city has ever made. The proceeds from this deal will have their own far-reaching effects on the city’s economic condition.

Still, we’re not sure — and neither is the city’s administration — that it’s the proverbial silver bullet to slay the beast of economic distress we’re fighting off tooth and nail for the time being.

Now would be a good time to put any positive thoughts and prayers together as a unified message to bring good results our way on this deal.

It could mean huge dividends for the city, and ultimately, for taxpayers in some form or fashion.
