Exercising your right to vote

It’s that time again. While it could become a tiresome topic to those in our readership who take the opportunity open to exercise their constitutional freedom bestowed through the right to vote, the importance of voter registration and turning out on election day cannot truly be adequately communicated.
Taking the democratic charge to vote in the upcoming general election this November a step further, we want to encourage you as residents of Ennis to reach out to those around you who you know don’t vote and change their minds.

That doesn’t mean impressing upon them your personal politics, as we are all well aware how the subject of politics can clear a room and turn friendships cold quicker than most others. Instead, make it your business to tell people they should care more than they do if they are among those who elect not to vote.

It is a choice. Many do it because they feel their votes don’t matter. We’ve heard that one before. Others do it because they don’t like any of the candidates. We’ve heard that one before, too.
Don’t forget those who say they don’t have the time to learn about what’s happening. That’s a popular excuse, as well, and particularly onerous considering the time those same people can find to watch the game or those season premiers every fall on television.

There is less than one week left before the voter registration deadline for the upcoming election is upon us. We expect we’ll see better turnout than in some elections, considering the relatively high-profile nature of the governor’s race that will be decided in November.

Still, without the active involvement of voters, the process is harmfully diluted. Without the encouragement those who vote can give to those who are disenfranchised, there’s that much less input and that much less representation.
