Departmental leaders are working hard

We’d like to show our respect for the heads of the individual departments that make up the larger government that is the administration of the city of Ennis.
Without their tireless efforts to respond to the reality of economic hardship that has put a squeeze on the city’s annual budget in the last few years, we’d be in a different scenario than we are now.

Neighbors all around us, including up to the level of our own state government, have been forced into more dramatic budget-saving measures like furloughs, layoffs and service trimming, but not so much here in Ennis.

There have been changes aimed at reducing expenditures without materially decreasing the service delivery offered by individual departments. The street crews, for example, stayed well under their budgeted expenditure level for 2009-10 this year, but streets were still patched when necessary. We also didn’t suffer the problematic issue of negative effects on employment.

That’s not to say there isn’t room for improvement in the city’s service delivery. There is no perfect system in that respect, but leadership is working to keep the situation as smooth as possible while meeting the harsh times head-on.

We will have to hope that the economy begins to improve in our region for our local economy to see a return to the growth pace that had been set before this recession began. Until then, managing the resources that we have will be key, especially as property tax revenue is expected to continue to decline slowly as the economy catches up to its burst bubble.
